Ten Tors Challenge

Mon 29 Jan 2018: Staff officer for running Ten Tors hands over

Lt Col Peter Bates OBE RA hands over the role of SO1 Ten Tors to Lt Col Crispin d’Apice RIFLES

After over three years in the job, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Bates has come to the end of his time as the senior staff officer responsible for planning and running the Army’s annual Ten Tors event. Peter has handed over the reins to Lieutenant Colonel Crispin d’Apice, who lives on Dartmoor and has experience of the event both from participating in it as a boy and through his day job of running the MoD’s training estate on Dartmoor.

Lt Col Bates will remain at HQ SW working on other Youth Development projects. On leaving he said “In all the 38 years I have been an army officer, being responsible for such a fabulous and life changing event has been one of the key highlights of my career. Working with the many dedicated and experienced volunteers; seeing, feeling and being part of the enthusiasm for the event; and knowing the efforts that so many make to ensure the right environment for a challenging but safe event for all those that take part - has been totally amazing. I’d like to thank all those that have helped me, in so many ways to keep both the Ten Tors Challenge and the Jubilee Challenge on track and where appropriate improved and refined. It’s been an absolute pleasure to be involved in a very very special event and work with you all. (PS I hope to be a visitor at TT18 !!)”
