The Jubilee Challenge

The Jubilee Challenge – 2017 – 40th Anniversary year

What is the Jubilee Challenge?

The Jubilee Challenge is a trekking expedition on northern Dartmoor designed specifically for young people with special needs, both physical and educational. Incorporated within the Ten Tors Event in 1977 as the Special Event, it was renamed the Jubilee Challenge in 1996. The Jubilee Challenge has developed into a popular event, with teams from learning disability establishments based in the seven Counties of the West Country participating. It is organised and run by the members of Exeter University Officer Training Corps (volunteer undergraduate officer cadets who are members of either Exeter or Plymouth Universities) on behalf of HQ SW, the sponsors of the Ten Tors Event. Together with the Ten Tors Challenge, it attracts considerable media and public attention. Numerous VIPs also attend and are willing volunteers to hand out medals at two moving prize giving ceremonies held after the Challenge is completed.

What does the Challenge involve?

Close to 400 participants are involved in the Jubilee Challenge each year. Participants enter the Challenge as a member of a team or as an individual. Just like the Ten Tors Challenge, they are required to trek and navigate across northern Dartmoor to specified checkpoints. The Jubilee Challenge begins on the Saturday at 7:30 am at a start point near to the Ten Tors Challenge massed start and the course closes at 6:00 pm. There are 4 different routes to choose from. Team Managers are required to discuss with the participants which route best matches their specific capabilities, age and experience. The Jubilee Challenge routes are published on the Ten Tors website and briefed to team managers during the Team Managers Briefing. The following general information should help individual participants select the route which best matches their capabilities:

  • Route 1 – 7.8 miles / 12.5 km - Rough going metalled road suitable for robust wheelchairs
  • Route 2 – 8.7 miles / 14 km - Cross country routes
  • Route 3 - 11 miles / 17.7 km - Cross country routes
  • Route 4 - 15 miles / 24.1 km - Cross country routes (“Ruby Route”

See “Routes” tab for pdf downloads.

When is the Jubilee Challenge?

The Jubilee Challenge takes place on the same Saturday of Ten Tors weekend in May. It’s usually the 1st or 2nd weekend of May.

Are there awards?

Specially commissioned Ten Tors Medals are awarded to all participants who complete their route:

Bronze for first timers

Silver for second timers

Gold for those completing one of the Jubilee Challenge routes for at least a third time.

Selected VIPs will present these medals immediately after individuals and teams have crossed the finish line. Named certificates will also be awarded to all participants, but these will be sent out to team managers the week after the event.

Do I need any special training?

All participants must be properly trained and equipped in order to complete the Challenge. Each establishment is required to appoint a competent Team Manager. Team Managers must attend a Managers Briefing day, which is held in Okehampton Camp in early October. Prior to the Challenge, Team Managers are required to ensure that the participants receive sufficient and appropriate training. They are then required to certify that the individual or team is sufficiently trained, physically prepared and suitably equipped to complete the Challenge in the anticipated conditions.

How do I apply?

Anyone wishing to apply should complete the application form, (available on the Ten Tors website) and return it to the Ten Tors Secretary by the cutoff date, (usually mid-September of the year preceding the event, but check the website for the exact date). Team selections will take place during the following week and team allocations will be published on the website shortly after selections have been made. Application forms and further information about the Jubilee Challenge is to be found on the Ten Tors website.
